Throughout its existence, York Castle has changed many times. From a seat of Royal power, through being the County Gaol for Yorkshire, to becoming one of Queen Victoria's H.M. Prisons, as a Military prison for the British Army, and as a heritage site today. Throughout these phases, York Castle has seen Murderers, Highwaymen, Traitors, Witches, Debtors, political prisoners, and many others pass through its imposing walls. It is the stories of these people that still capture the imagination today. Yet a series of questions inevitably arises. Who were these people? Why did they end up at York Castle? What was their experience of life inside the castle walls? What was their eventual fate, and was it truly deserved? Drawing on new research as well as well-established narratives, this book explores these questions. Finding out about the lives and stories of those who were imprisoned at York Castle. It was, after all, the people, their lives, and their fates within the walls that gave a prison its reputation. Whether through a misjudged or impulsive act, standing up for their beliefs, or through simple misfortune.
